Migraine Stage 4: Postdrome

Postdrome fatigueIn my opinion, this is the most underrated and overlooked stage of a migraine. You may have experienced it but not realized that it had a name. The feeling that lingers awhile after the migraine pain subsides, whether it feels like a bad hangover or like you just got hit by a train, is called postdrome.

What are the symptoms?

  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating/confusion
  • Dizziness/lightheadedness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Decreased energy
  • Mild head pain/sore feeling in the area where a migraine was
  • Euphoria OR depression

Fun Fact: Migraine postdrome has only been studied since 2004, so much additional research is needed.

Depending on the severity of the prior stages, some of my migraine postdromes require hours or days to recover.  This is the most frustrating part for me because it’s hard for non-migraineurs to understand. Have you ever heard “migraine is over, you should feel better now?!” What are your postdromes like? Do non-migraineurs in your life understand them?

I call this “headache head” or “‘graine brain.”
